MANILA — The commander of the Armed Forces has placed the military on alert following reports of a massive anti-corruption protest action in the government.
However, General Romeo Brawner Jr. clarified the military has not monitored any active or serious threat against the government as the Republic celebrates its 128th Independence Day.
At the Senate, some senators said they had received reports of physical threats within the upper legislature’s facilities. (Also read: President Marcos orders investigation on shooting incident at the Senate)
“We are conducting continuing monitoring within the Armed Forces of the Philippines, and so far we have not seen threats coming from within the Armed Forces of the Philippines,” Brawner told journalists during the launch of the TV show “Patriots.”
“I believe that our soldiers are disciplined and very professional. Coming from the commanders also from the ground, they said they are not seeing any threat from the inside.”
He said the military takes any report of destabilization seriously. There were social media posts about the planned protests on June 12. (Also read: Coup jitters not only a headache for Marcos Jr. but also for US, allies)
There were reports of an influential religious group that supports Vice President Sara Duterte might storm the president’s office.
“We are closely monitoring the situation through intelligence units,” said Brawner, adding that the AFP is “working closely” with the PNP and other relevant agencies in monitoring the situation.
Brawner appealed to the public to stop using him in encouraging Filipinos to join the rally.
“It’s saddening that even my picture is being used to encourage Filipinos to join the rally that will happen on June 12,” said Brawner.
Brawner said he also got some text messages, asking “if its true the Armed Forces of the Philippines has withdrawn its support (from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr)”.
“That is not true. We remain a united, disciplined and professional force,” said Brawner, adding that the military will continue to do its job of defending the country.
Last year, rumors circulated that retired generals had asked Brawner to withdraw support from the president due to the corruption scandal.
