Zamboanga del Sur — Government troops killed at least 10 Islamist militants during a brief firefight in an intelligence-driven operation in Lanao del Sur, an Army general said.
In a statement, the 1st Infantry “Tabak” Division commander, Major General Yegor Rey Barroquillo Jr. said a senior leader of the outlawed Maute group, an Islamist militant organization aligned with the Islamic State, was killed in the firefight.
“This is not merely a tactical success; it is justice served for every fallen soldier, every grieving family, and every community that suffered under terror, including the victims of the Munai ambush,” Barroquillo said.
He was referring to a January 2026 ambush in Munai, Lanao del Sur, where four soldiers died and another was seriously wounded.
“Our forces have struck a decisive blow, and we will continue forward until enduring peace is fully secured,” he added. The government forces did not suffer any casualties during the surprise raid last week.
The military said residents led troops to the known Islamist militants’ lair in Lanao del Sur.
The combined force of police and military also recovered several firearms, an explosive device, and improvised explosive components in the area.
An infant was found, rescued safely, and given medical attention.
By dismantling the Islamist militants’ leadership core, Barroquillo said the Army demonstrated its firm resolve and operational strength, delivering justice to the fallen and reinforcing its unwavering commitment to achieving lasting peace in Lanao.
