MANILA — Vice President Sara Duterte failed to disclose in her annual filing of statements of assets, liabilities, and net worth (SALN) a property her husband acquired in 2024, a serious offense in an unexplained wealth case before the Senate impeachment court.
Prosecutors presented two officials from the Land Registration Authority (LRA) to prove the vice president had unexplained wealth after she failed to report a six-million-peso land acquisition by her husband in 2024. (Also read: Prosecution presents expert witness on anti-corruption laws)
Kathy Florence Baldonado testified on Wednesday that Duterte’s husband, lawyer Mans Carpio, acquired a 379 sqm property at a residential subdivision in Matina, Davao City for six million pesos in July 2024.
A month later, he mortgaged the property at a local bank for eight million pesos, LRA records showed. (Also read: Vice President received cash, chocolates, and cars as gifts)
However, these transactions and the property were not reflected in the vice president’s SALN for fiscal year 2025, a clear violation of law.
A second LRA official said Carpio also acquired property on a resort island, which was not reported in the vice president’s SALN.
Prosecutor Jonathan Keith Flores said Carpio acquired a property in 2013 but reported it five years later, another violation of law.
Prosecutors were proving that the vice president’s wealth grew exponentially from seven million pesos in 2007 to 98 million pesos in 2025. Some of her wealth was not disclosed, including dozens of firearms worth more than seven million pesos.
Prosecutors said Duterte hid her wealth, betraying public trust and violating the 1987 Constitution, and should be removed from office and barred from seeking public office in 2028.
